Also known as: Straddle bat to folded leaf, Folded leaf to straddle bat.

Technique

  1. Start in an L-base with the flyer standing at the base’s feet, facing the base.
  2. The base turns the toes outward and places the feet in the flyer’s Hip pockets, creating a Folded leaf.
  3. The flyer straddles and pikes hard, driving the thighs into the base’s feet.
  4. The flyer twists the torso, bringing one arm across to the opposite side of the body to make a T with the arms.
  5. The base places the hands on the flyer’s shoulders and presses up so the flyer faces upward, then bends the weighted leg to take more load on that side.
  6. The base removes the other foot as the flyer twists and switches the foot position (the sides swap).
  7. Once the feet are replaced, the flyer opens the shape with a “helicopter” motion of the leg, arriving in a Straddle bat.
  8. To exit, choose one: bring the flyer over the base’s head as the flyer pikes hard to the ground; move into a Floating pashi and exit from there; or take a Hand-to-hand grip and press up into a Side star, the base bending the weighted leg to bring the flyer down to the side.

Form tips

  • The flyer keeps the thighs driving towards the ground throughout.
  • When crossing an arm across the body, the flyer can grab the opposite ankle (left arm to right ankle, and vice versa) to hold a strong pike.
  • The base can support the flyer’s shoulders to assist the twist.
